Good Instructions, Good Range, Good Value
So I read a bunch of the reviews here and on other sites and hesitantly bought this for installation on my '03 Toyota 4Runner as a gift for my wife, so she wouldn't have to run out to start the car in the freezing cold this winter.

I took the advice of numerous other reviewers, and it was well worth it. Yes, you should do your homework. You can get all the resources you need (instructions and wiring "cheat sheet" for your specific vehicle) directly from the bulldog security website -- without even purchasing the unit. Read the instructions carefully (they're a bit obtuse but you can probably get a grip on them after a couple of reads) and make sure you are up for the task. It's not particularly easy, but it's not particularly difficult either. And I've never done any real electrical work to speak of. It's nice they even have careful instructions on how to perform a "correct" splice. In addition the kit comes with the primary tools you'll need - a voltage checker...

Good Value, There Might Be Better Options.
I purchased this remote start to install as a surprise for my in-laws for Christmas. The install involved somewhere around 8 wire splices in to the vehicle. The instructions say to wrap the wires around each other in an odd way. I used a soldering iron and mastic based electrical insulator, which I think gives a more permanent connection.

For the install in a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee I had to remove the dash trim pieces below the steering wheel to install the security key loop, tie in to the ignition harness and tie in to the parking light wire. I also had to remove the driver door trim to tap in to the security and door lock wires. I installed the system to use the factory key fob, so they wouldn't have to have two fobs (one for locks and one for remote start). This system allows you to press the lock button on the factory fob three times to trigger the remote start. I also found that if you don't program the unit to tell it that you have a keyless entry, but you do...
Wish I could give no stars - DO NOT BUY!
This remote starter was a complete waste of time and energy. I purchased for my husbands car, and my dad who has been a Mazda master tech for 30+ years spent an entire Saturday trying to get it to work. Parts were missing to complete installation and the parts that were included were found defective. After attempting to call the service department for Bulldog 15 times (no answer and kept getting redirected) he finally gave up. Left several messages to call him back with no such luck. Customer service is just as bad as the product, DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME/MONEY! Price may be tempting, but please be warned!
